Selecting Race

When it comes to selecting a race to play, each one has it's own flavour and style. For example elves live to be 700 years old. Whereas the typical human lives to be around 90 years of age. You also have some races like the tiefling and aasimar which are basically the complete opposites with tieflings being cursed creatures with usually horns and red skin, and the aasimar being angels. If you just want to start playing and ignore the tedious part of making a character, you will find that the Essentials Kit has pre-made character sheets for you. Should you care to build your character keep reading. It is important to note that the specifics of lore and will not be mentioned here as you should already own a copy of the Players Handbook.

For this build as an example we will choose the high elf race on page 21 of the Players Handbook. As an elf our dexterity score gains +2, our base walking speed is 30ft per turn, size is medium, we have darkvision which allows us to see in normal darkness The keen senses trait gives us proficiency in perception, our fey ancestry gives us advantage on charmed saving throws and magic can't put you to sleep. The elf race gives us a +1 bonus to our intelligence and proficiency with longsword, shortsword, longbow, shortbow. We learn 1 cantrip which is a type of spell more info on that later, and we learn 1 extra language on top of common, elvish. Elves don't sleep but rather enter a trance for 4 hours instead of 8 for a long rest. Keep these in mind for now they will become important later.
