Course Description:
Collaborative and Emergent Behavior is a survey of computation as a means of understanding, modeling, and describing artificial and natural systems. The emergence of complex behavior from the interaction of simple rules governing individual components is illustrated and discussed, as well as the role of communication between system components. Selected systems to be studied will be drawn from different topic areas which may include the worldwide web, the mind (cognitive science), formal logic, autonomous robotics, chaos and fractals, and bioinformatics. Each topic will incorporate an associated laboratory experience.

Topic A: Chaos and Fractals (5 lectures) [Kolokolova/Vardy]

Topic C: Artificial Intelligence and Games (6.5 lectures) [Peña-Castillo]
Topic D: Swarm Robotics (5.5 lectures) [Vardy]

We will be using TopHat for interactive questions in class. All students will need to create a free account by going to the following address: https://app.tophat.com/register/student/. You will be required to bring a laptop, tablet or mobile phone to class in order to use TopHat.
Evaluation Scheme:
In-class participation (2% for topics A and B, and 3% for C and D) 10%
Labs (10% each) 40%
Quizzes (10% each for topics A and B) 20%
Tests (15% each for topics C and D) 30%

Notes:
→ In the event of university closure on the day of a test, the test will be given in the next class meeting.
→ Lab attendance is required.
→ In-class participation will be credited by using TopHat.
→ Course material will be available in D2L.
→ All grades will be assigned according to the University Calendar (Section 5.8.2 under University Regulations).
→ If, for special circumstances (such as medical or bereavement) you miss a deadline, notify your instructor, providing any related documentation, as described in the university calendar.
