This data visualization is aimed to show the audience how the US is doing with regards to COVID-19 cases by comparing them with other parts of the world.
First, an interactive world map to show the amount of cases and deaths per country. Second, a stacked bar chart comparing the countries with the highest confirmed cases and deaths with the US.
The interactive world map includes the following attributes/dimensions:
Besides that, the interactive world map also includes other features such as the ability to zoom and drag the map, as well as the hovering function that show name of the country, total cases, and deaths. The interactive map also has a dropdown selection to sort the cases by month. The color of the map will change according to the total case of that month user have chosen.
An example, we can see that the color changed rapidly from light to dark in the US since March 2020 while some countries changed slowly and some plateaued at a certain gradient.
The percentage stacked bar chart shows the ratio between the total confirmed cases, deaths of each country with regards to the US.
The bar chart includes the following attributes/dimensions:
The purpose of the stacked bar chart is to allow the users to visualize the data in a different perspective.
As example, by comparing the ratio of each country, users will notice that US (3%) has lower percentage of death rate over total cases while comparing to Mexico(8%).
Using a same dataset but different visual designs can affect the result. On the world map, we can see the US is not doing well. But, when we look into the small details in the percentage bar chart we can see the US has very high total confirmed cases but they have one of the lowest death percentage among other countries on the chart.
