Spring Newsletter 1997
Now that the snow has receded from the woods and the skis have been put
away, it is time to don the hiking boots and enjoy the great outdoors
with a little orienteering.
Orienteering Clinic
Over the past few years we have offered beginners courses in orienteering
to attract new members to the sport. These courses have been very basic
and have not been of interest to experienced orienteers.
This year we are trying a new venue that will be scaled to the skill level
of the orienteer. We plan to split the participants into groups based
on their experience and then take these smaller groups though courses
of different levels of difficulty illustrating points that will improve
the participant's skills. For the advanced orienteers we will be
illustrating contour orienteering, pace counting, attack points, compass
bearings and route choice. For the beginners we will be showing them how to
read the map and also how to orient the map using features and a compass.
Summer Mapping Project
As usual we have applied for a Challenge grant and hopefully we will be able
to have some students produce a new orienteering map for this year's
provincial championships. This year we are planning
to map Motion Head, an area just south of Petty Harbour or the area opposite
the Flakey Downs map, across the Trans Canada Highway from the Holyrood
access road. Please let us know if you have any preferences.
Spring Events
For all other events, please refer to our schedule.
Note that there is a $2.00 map fee for all courses.
As well as our usual spring offerings, please note the summer event on
Aug. 16th. This event is being offered to accommodate visitors attending
a geography conference but is open to the general public as well.
You will also note that we have included a tentative Fall schedule.
This will help in making long range plans but is subject to additions.
