Fall Newsletter 1996

We hope everyone had a great summer and are now ready to get out and go orienteering.

Canadian Orienteering Championships

A few club members, Noel Roy, Elizabeth Oliver, Kagan Roy, Michael Rayment and Phil Graham, ventured off the island to attend the Canadian Orienteering Championships held in Wakefield, Quebec near Gatineaux Park. The weather was perfect for orienteering, sunny but not too hot, and the area boasted vast areas of runnable woods with intricate land forms and numerous boulders and cliffs. Needless to say the courses were challenging but by carefully navigating through the maze of features we were able to successfully locate even the most difficult controls. Many thanks to the Ottawa Orienteering Club for doing such a great job in hosting this years Canadian Orienteering championships.

Summer Mapping Project

Again this summer our club received a Challenge'96 grant to do some mapping. After the success of the test meet in Butterpot Park this spring, we decided to extend the Butterpot Map so that we could hold this years Provincial Championships there. John Paul Richards and Jared Rypkema did field work on the east side of Butterpot Park and extended the digitized portion of the Butterpot Park map. They also digitized a number of older maps such as Bowring Park and Rotary Park to make updating and reprinting of these maps easier. In addition they started field work on the South Side Hills map that we will hopefully use next year.

Fall Events

We will be starting off this fall with an event on Bell Island. The ferry leaves Portugal Cove at 11:20AM, 1:05PM and 1:45PM and returns from Bell Island at 2:25pm, 3:45pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm and 7:30pm. We have a special group rate for the 11:20am ferry. Regular ferry rates apply to all other times.

Provincial Championships

This year the Provincial Orienteering Championships will be held in Butterpot Park. There will be courses for all ages and levels of experience. Make it a point to come out and visit Butterpot Park and take in our event. We will be printing maps on a color laser printer so be sure to register before Wednesday, Oct 2.
