We hope everyone had a great summer and are now ready to get out and go orienteering. We had a very busy spring but thanks to all the help we received from club members we were able to meet all our commitments. Besides our regularly scheduled events this spring, the following events were undertaken by the Club.
The Easter Extravaganza held in Bowring Park was unfortunately cancelled, but a few brave souls completed the course in the pouring rain. The Cuboree orienteering event put on by Michael Rayment and Jody McIntyre was enjoyed by 700 cubs although it was a heavily disguised event. The Cubs had to disarm all the Romulan bombs(the control flags). The orienteering event put on by Michael Rayment and Nolan White in Killdevil Camp in Gros Morne Park for the Jamboree was a great success. Approximately 300 scouts, venturers and leaders participated in the event. Randy Dodge and Michael Sullivan put on an event for the Parks Awareness program in ButterPot Park but, unfortunately, this event was also a bit damp. The final event was for the City at the Peter Pan Extravaganza in Bowring Park with the help of Nolan White, Randy Dodge and Michael Sullivan. About 100 people visited the orienteering booth and went out in search of the controls that were set near prominent spots in the park.
At the last moment, a Challenge grant came through and we were able to hire two students, John Paul Richards and Geoff Graham, who have been working on a new map of ButterPot Park. The complete Park base map has been entered using our OCAD mapping software and about 20% of the field work has been done. Based on the success of the Bell Island map we would like to offer mapping kits for mappers who would like to complete the field work on a section of the unfinished map in ButterPot Park.
