Welcome to the new year. As we enter the 2017/2018 season our club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary since its founding in 1968 by Dr. Yves LeGal. As we look to celebrate our history we also recognize that the nature of the club has changed from a university club to a community based club. We will celebrate our anniversary in 2018 but also need to change our club name to match the change in the club.
The training schedule remains the same as last year. You can find the training schedule, membership rates and general information about the club on our website at www.cs.mun.ca/~munjudo or our MUN Judo Facebook group. The coaches this year are:
Youth (12 & under) – Eileen Parsons – firstname.lastname@example.org, AJ Marshal – email@example.com
Cadet (13-18) – Edward Quinn – firstname.lastname@example.org, Dave Crane – email@example.com
Seniors (19 & Up) – AJ Marshal – – firstname.lastname@example.org, Thomas Puestow – Thomas.email@example.com, Maurice Sheppard – firstname.lastname@example.org
If you have any questions about training sessions contact the specific coach or our Head Coach Maurice Sheppard at 726-0945 or – email@example.com
Recognizing the need to change the club name we are holding a new club name contest with a deadline for submission of suggestions by March 1, 2018. Submit ideas as often as you wish! The prize for the winning submission will be a new judo gi or $100 cash. Submissions should be sent to George Beckett at firstname.lastname@example.org . Note that “St. John’s Judo Club” is not eligible as this is a name that has been used by other clubs in the past. The new club name will take effect in September 2018.
Fund raising to help with travel costs to tournaments and training camps continue to be a high priority for the club. Projects will be coordinated through our new Parents Fund Raising Committee. In Spring/Summer 2018 we raised $386 in the Easter Basket draw, $117 in perogi sale and $734.95 from the summer bottle drive. You can help with club fund raising by donating recyclables to the club through our club account at Ever Green Recycling. Recyclables can be credited to the MUN Judo account or left in their self-serve section using the phone number 7260945.
The club can order judo gis or other special equipment at a discounted price for you. A new JudoGi (Cost: $85.00 white or $100.00 blue for basic JudoGii uniform ) or specialty apparel can be ordered. Payment can be by cash, cheque to MUN Judo, or etransfer the amount to MUN Judo via email to Maurice Sheppard or George Beckett. Orders normally arrive in approximately one week from date of order.
New members are welcome to join at any time throughout the year so encourage friends to try judo.
We look forward to seeing you on the mats!
