Abstract
Webb, J.A. (1998) "Confederation, Conspiracy and Choice: A Discussion",
Newfoundland Studies, 14(2), 169-187.
Many people in the academic and cultural communities have suggested
there was a conspiracy to thwart the democratic process in 1948 and
bring Newfoundland into the Canadian confederation against the will of
the majority. While both the British and Canadian governments did what
they could to encourage Newfoundlanders to join Canada the charges of
conspiracy and treachery are not sustained by any evidence. Late
twentieth century conspiracy theorists ignore evidence that runs counter
to their supposition, and reveal much about their own reactionary
ideology in the process.
