NOTE: This web page is out of date. Please see Information Technology Services' Quick Connect guides for information on how to connect to MUN's @Memorial wireless network using Ubuntu.

Introduction

This page describes how to connect to MUN's wireless network using Ubuntu v8.04 (Hardy Heron). All the necessary software and drivers should be available with a standard desktop install of the operating system. Ubuntu Desktop Edition can be downloaded for free from the Ubuntu download page. Ubuntu v8.04 CDs are also available for free from the Digital Media Center in The Commons area of the MUN Library. These instructions may also work for most Linux distributions that use the NetworkManager applet (by Red Hat and Novell) for network connections.

The instructions assume that your wireless card is recognized by Ubuntu (this may require the use of restricted drivers for some wireless cards). To determine if your card is supported, check out the Ubuntu Community Documentation. If you card is not recognized, check out some of the resources at the bottom of this page.

These instructions also assume that you've registered your computer's Media Access Control (MAC) address and have set up an appropriate login name and password using C&C's Device Authorization Tool (DAT). Note that this web site is accessible from within MUN only.

Instructions

  1. To access the wireless network configuration menu, click on the NetworkManager applet in the notification area
The NetworkManager applet is typically between the battery indicator and volume control applet in the upper right part of the default desktop. When the computer is not connected to a network, the applet displays two computers with an small exclamation point in the foreground.

    networkmanager
  2. Select  Connect to Other Wireless Network...

    connect to other...

This will bring up a dialog box in which you will give the network settings and specify your login name and password.

  3. For  Network Name: , enter stu, fac or guest.
The network name was assigned to you by C&C's DAT.

    network name field
  4. For  Wireless Security: , select  WPA Enterprise

    wireless security field

Selecting this option will cause the dialog box to expand so that you can enter your authorization information.

  5. For the  Identity:  field, enter the user name assigned to you by C&C's DAT.
For the  Password:  field, enter the password that you selected using the DAT.

The other fields can be left unchanged and should be assigned as shown below:

    id and password field
  6. After entering all the information, press the  Connect  button.

An attempt will be made to connect with a wireless access point and the NetworkManager applet icon will animate. The connection will take several seconds — be patient:

    attempt connection

If the authentication succeeded, the strength of the signal will be displayed by the NetworkManager applet:

    connection success

If the connection is not successful, try some of the troubleshooting guides in the Resources section below, for help.
