Government House

This is the offical residence of the Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland. It was designed by Sir Thomas Cochrane who changed the plans so much, that the building ended up costing over three times the original estimate. It was completed in 1831 using red sandstone from Signal Hill. It is interesting to note that Government House is one of only a handful of private residences in Canada surrounded by a moat. The English architect included the moat to keep the house free of lizars and snakes. He obvisiously didn't resench his location, or he would have known that Newfoundland has no reptiles.
