Colonial Building West(Military Road West)




The Colonial Building was built in 1850. It served as the seat of the Newfoundland government since its construction up to 1959, when the goverment moved to its present location - the Confederation Building. The Colonial Building was the scene of many historic events. Its basement, where a savings bank stood, was the scene of the first bank robbery in Newfoundland. It held the 1887 Jubilee Ball for Queen Victoria and was also the scene of many riots in 1932.
