Avalon Mall

The original (and possibly the ugliest) shopping mall in New foundland. The Avalon mall holds Saint John's Cinema, Wall Mart, a food court and a restaurant (plus other stuff). A stream (Rennie's brook) runs past the mall, the university, into Quidy-Vidy lake and then into the Atlantic via Quidi Vidi harbour.

Like Burkittsville, Canadians have a strong desire to show off their electrical and telecommunications systems. Ariel displays such as this (and Young Street, below) are common.

Fires seem to be common place in St. John's. Another shop down town had been burnt out just before I arrived in Canada.

I never did figure out why St. John's curling club had a Log Cabin (map). Or why they removed it.

Vol transatlantique Alcock et Brown

At 12:58 p.m. Newfoundland time on 14 June, 1919, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown of the Royal Air Force took off from nearby Lester's Field in a Vickers Vimy biplane. Sixteen hours and twelve minutes later, having travelled 1800 miles, they landed at Clifden, Ireland, thus completing the first non-stop transatlantic flight.
